    The Emblem

    The Cross and Flame Award emblem carries the logo of The United Methodist Church. It may be worn with the uniform for dress and official occasions. It identifies the recipient as one who has served children and youth through The United Methodist Church

    The Purpose of the Award

    T he United Methodist Church accepts the programs of Civic Youth-Serving Agencies (Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., Big Brothers Big Sisters, Camp Fire USA, and 4-H) as contributing to the church’s goals in its ministry with children and youth.

    The Office of Civic Youth-Serving Agencies/ Scouting of the General Commission on United Methodist Men recognizes men and women who give unusual amounts of time and energy in dedicated service with children and youth. The Cross and Flame program gives recognition to adult leaders who have given exceptional service in the use and promotion of programs for young people.

    Criteria for Nominating a Candidate

    THE RECIPIENT OF THE AWARD MUST HAVE AN OUTSTANDING RECORD OF SERVICE TO CHILDREN AND YOUTH AS DETERMINED BY THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
    1. Is an active member of a recognized Christian church.
    2. Has given faithful service to the local church congregation by serving in church leadership positions.
    3. Has a continuous record (three years) of using and supporting the programs of the Civic Youth-Serving Agencies/Scouting in the life of the church.
    4. Has served these organizations on the unit (troop, club, etc.), district, council, or other level by active participation in the program.
    5. Has actively and effectively promoted the religious awards program.
    6. Has promoted the use of religious services when camping or other activities that take the scouting groups away from the church during regularly scheduled worship services.

    Procedures

    Nominees must be recommended to the local church by the local church scouting coordinator. The application must be approved by the pastor of the local church and presented to the church administrative board, council on ministries, or administrative council along with the application for approval. Upon approval, the application is mailed to the Office of Civic Youth-Serving Agencies in Nashville, Tennessee. A certificate of merit, 5/8” clutch-back pin, ribbon, and medal will be prepared and returned to the local church. A check for $60.00 must accompany the application to cover all costs or submit the online form below. No more than five per year per church may be issued. The nomination form is on the back of this brochure. Please allow 30 days for processing.
