Silver Torch Award Program
The Purpose of the Silver Torch Award is to recognize adults who have given faithful service to the United Methodist Church at the regional, national or international level through Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the USA, Camp Fire USA, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, or United Methodist Youth.
Criteria for Nominating a Candidate:
- The Silver Torch may be awarded to an adult for exemplary service to scouting and/or youth ministry beyond the annual conference. The award may be presented to an individual who has given service at the central conference (international), general church (national) or jurisdictional (regional) levels.
- Recipient must be Christian but not necessarily a member of the United Methodist Church.
- Award is by nomination only. No self-nominations permitted. Any United Methodist adult may submit a nomination.

Examples of Service:
Candidates may be leaders of the BSA National Jamboree or International Jamboree, a general agency board, advisory committee or a group affi liated with a general agency such as the National Association of United Methodist Scouters, or the National Association of Conference Presidents. Candidates may have provided leadership for mission trips to a central conference, or perhaps they directed efforts to raise funds to support a central conference evangelistic initiative for youth and/or scouting. Likely candidates include those who raised funds, coordinated or directed initiatives to support projects like Nothing But Nets to help eradicate malaria or other killer diseases in Africa. Candidates may also have performed signifi cant acts of mission and/or ministry in response to the denomination’s four areas of focus: (1) leadership development (2) new church development/renewal (3) global health and (4) the elimination of poverty.
Process for Review and Selection:
Aspecial sub-committee of the Scouting Ministry Committee of the General Commission on United Methodist Men (GCUMM) reviews nominations on a periodic basis. Please allow 60 days for the nomination to be reviewed. Approval of a nomination is not guaranteed, but there is no limit to the number of nominations that one may submit.
